George Reis (Rice) was born in Monroe County on May 8, 1844.  He volunteered and was enrolled August 2, 1861 at Red Bud, Illinois.  He served with Company M. in the Seventh Illinois U.S. Cavalry.  George was stationed at Bird Point, Missouri around December 29, 1861.  In September of 1862, he was in Iuka, Mississippi.  His horse fell on him and broke George's collarbone and fractured his skull.  George was discharged  March 14, 1863 at Lagrange, Tennessee, because of disability.  The early part of his Civil War file spells his name as George Rice; later on, it used the spelling of Reis.  He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Cameron Garrett Post 115 in Carl Junction, Missouri.
