Monroe County was established January 6, 1816
before Illinois became a state. It was once a part of Randolph and St. Clair Counties. The
Monroe County seat was originally Harrisonville from 1816 to 1825, and is now Waterloo
1825-present and was named for James Monroe, 5th president of the United States.
