The Waterloo Times Friday, April 30, 1915 Sisters Have Close Call Three persons, tow of them Catholic nuns, narrowly escaped serious injury, Sunday morning, when an automobile they occupied became uncontrollable and swerved and into a wheat field on the farm of Ex-Congressman William N. Baltz, near Millstadt. William Reis, with the two sisters, were on their way from Columbia, their home, to Freeburg, to attend the convention of the Federation of Catholic Societies at Freeburg. While traveling briskly the steering pin gave way, causing the right front wheel to become un-guidable. Before Reis could stop it the machine had swerved from the road, lurched through a ditch a foot deep and ploughed forty feet into the wheat field. Though badly shaken up, none of the trio were injured. They resumed their way in another machine. In running off the road the machine missed striking a telephone pole by inches. --- Belleville News Democrat.
