The Waterloo Paper January 11, 1915 Were Not Married John E. Upchurch of Evansville, Ind., and Miss Leno R. Beggerstaff of Enfield, Ill., came here on New Year’s Day to be married. They looked up our police magistrate, Thomas M. Crowe, who went to the marriage license office with them to procure the necessary license. County Clerk Eisenbart, however, refused to issue the license, expressing his doubts as to the legality of the marriage on a holiday, and the couple not wishing to remain over departed without being married. Mr. Crowe was greatly chagrined by the license being refused. The county clerk maintains, however, that no license was ever issued by him on a legal holiday. Mr. Crowe says he does not belong to the trust and is in the market for all comers in the marriage market, and will “splice” them at regular rates in the latest approved methods.
