The Waterloo Times May 6, 1942 COLUMBIA Columbia had several automobile accidents over the weekend the result of which was several wrecked cars and one man in the hospital but no serious injuries. The following were visitors at the Fred Heise, Sr., home on Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Fred Heise, Jr., and baby of St. Louis, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Jones and children of Maplewood, Ill., and Mr. William Jones of St. Louis. One hundred and fifty children were immunized for diphtheria at the Public School by the local doctors last Monday. The program is being carried out by Miss Freda LeKamp, the Monroe County School nurse. They will be given their second shots May 11th. The Columbia Household Science Club held their regular monthly meeting Tuesday afternoon, April 21. Mrs. Horace Krause presided. Regular business was conducted. Mrs. Esther Cohen was appointed chairman of the Defense Stamp sales. A nominating committee was also appointed. The Club sponsors the Girl Scout Troop and the mater of sponsoring a Brownie troop was discussed, action to be taken later. The Club has been instrumental in the organization of the Home Nursing Class that has recently completed its course. After the business meeting the Junior Girl Scouts presented a short program which was well received. Group Nine of the Illinois Bankers Association held their Spring meeting at Turner Hall in Columbia last Thursday, April 23. There was an attendance of about three hundred. The afternoon session consisted of regular business matters and the discussion of banking problems. At 6:30 a banquet was served on the main floor of the hall. Robert E. Lee Hill, past president Rotary International, University of Missouri, was the speaker. The ladies attending the meeting were entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Rauch in the afternoon at a musical tea. Miss Dorothy Weinel gave a brief history of Columbia after which they were taken on a sightseeing tour of the town. Funeral services were held at the Immaculate Conception Church at 9 a.m. Monday for William Wecker of near Lake View, who died at the Missouri-Pacific hospital at St. Louis on Wednesday, April 22, 1942. Mr. Wecker was born near Columbia, January 24, 1868, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wecker. He was married to Miss Louisa Krack at Columbia October 25, 1905. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Henry of East St. Louis and Lawrence of the Panama Canal Zone, two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Steppig of Columbia and Mrs. Clarence Tipton of Dupo, two brothers, Louis of Columbia and Joe of Dupo, two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Mosbacher of East St. Louis and Mrs. Ben Weilbacher of Columbia. He was an employee of the Missouri-Pacific railroad for many years. He was in good health until last week Monday when he suffered a stroke.
