Garnder, Ernestine L.
Ernestine L. Gardner nee Umbreit, 83, of Waterloo, died June 30, 2004, in St. Louis. She was born 
December 11, 1920, the daughter of the late Ernest and Sophie Umbreit nee Burkhardt. Mrs. Gardner 
was married to the late Robert L. Gardner. She is survived by her children William (Vickie) Gardner, 
of Waterloo, and Julie (William) Chmelir, of Webster Groves, Mo.; grandsons Matthew (Stephanie) 
Gardner, of Waterloo, and Steven Gardner and his fiancée Candace Carrico, of Waterloo; great-
grandson Eli Gardner; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 
daughter Susan G. Gardner and brother William R. Umbreit. Mrs. Gardner was a member of St. Paul 
United Church of Christ in Waterloo. Her visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Her funeral was 
at St. Paul United Church of Christ, officiated by Pastor Chris Hucker. She is buried at Kolmer 
Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ in 
Waterloo, Morrison-Talbott Library or the Arthritis Foundation.
