William Kunkel Killed In Accident Thursday Waterloo Republican, March 1977 A brother of a Waterloo woman was fatally injured Thursday morning when the car he was driving hit a bridge abutment on Davis Street Ferry Road near Sports Page Inn. William Oliver Kunkel, 50, of East Carondelet was dead on arrival at Centreville Township Hospital, where he was taken by a Columbia ambulance. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s office said the accident happened about 6:50 a.m. Kunkel was the only person in the car. Kunkel, a laborer for 31 years at the Swift Co. in National City, was buried Sunday in Palmer Hill Cemetery near Columbia. He is survived by three sisters and two brothers, including Mrs. Sylvester (Geneva) Schlemmer of Waterloo, Mrs. Ernest (Elrod) Kohlenberger of East Carondelet, Mrs. Otis (Pearl) Forsee of Granite City, and Herbert and Henry Kunkel, both of Dupo. Kunkel was not married. He is the son of Henry and Louis (nee Sutter) Kunkel, both deceased. A Korean War veteran, Mr. Kunkel was a member of the Dupo V.F.W.
