Riebeling, a well-known and highly respected farmer, died at his home three miles south of Columbia on Thursday, Dec. 17, 1914, and his remains were interred in St. Paul's cemetery Sunday, December 20. The deceased was born in the Fatherland, March 20, 1841, and at an early age in company with his parents came to America. For sixty-seven years he had been a resident of this vicinity. For a number of years he worked in the cooper shop of the Star Mills then owned by the late Henry Huch. Later he moved on the farm south of town where by diligence and thrift he accumulated a competency. He was twice married; his first wife was Mary Frierdich with whom he had six children. Several years after the death of his first wife he married Miss Mary Kanta, who bore him twelve children. Five of the children preceded the father in death, and thirteen children, with the bereaved widow survive him. The children living are; Fred in St. Louis; Charles Jr. in Jacobs, Jackson Co., IL., Herman, Joseph, John and George in Indianapolis, Ind.; Frank, Edward and William and Mary, wife of John Huck, Lulu wife of Fred Washhauser; and Misses Emma and Anna all residing near Columbia. Besides these he leaves eighteen grand children and three brothers; George and Henry in Columbia and William in St. Louis. Mr. Riebeling was of sturdy stock, a Viking in form and strength, he was a type of the old pioneer, a fit specimen to blaze the trail and subdue the wilderness. He was a member of the local Harugari Lodge, which organization attended the f uneral en corpora, and assisted the last rites. His remains were taken to St. Paul's Evangelical Church to which he held membership. Rev W. Schlinkmann delivered a most impressive address and on account of the inclement weather, he permitted Mayor F. G. Rapp on behalf of the Harugari to make his address in the church also. All of his children were present, as well as a large concourse of relatives, friends, and acquaintances. He was aged 73 years 8 months and 27 days. For several years Mr. Riebeling had been suffering with asthma, and the last few weeks of the damp weather aggravated his affliction that death was sudden. Peace to his memory.
