The Columbia Star September 27, 1928 LOCAL NEWS ITEMS John Wuertz and family of St. Louis have moved into their fine new bungalow in the Wilson sub-division. Andrew Sander purchased a fourteen acre tract of land from Dehn and Habermehl. The consideration is unknown. The land is part of the old Patrick Burns farm. Clarence Horton moved his family to Dupo this week. The Horton’s had to vacate their house here because the owner wanted it and he had to move to Dupo because he could find no vacant homes here. State’s Attorney Gus Fridrichs of Waterloo is seriously ill. He underwent an operation for appendicitis at St. Clement’s hospital in Red Bud Monday. Last reports from his bedside are that he is resting just a little more comfortably but still gravely ill. His illness, coming as it does in the thick campaign, (Mr. Fridrichs is a candidate for State’s Attorney on the Republican ticket) is particularly trying but we are confident his friends will stand by him and remember to vote for him on Election Day. The Fridrichs have had lots of bad luck lately for Mrs. Fridrichs just came home form the Red Bud hospital where she spent several weeks wrestling with a serious case of blood poisoning. The district Royal Neighbor convention will be held here October 20. It will be a big day for Columbia for it is probably that there will be nearly a thousand visitors and delegates present at the convention, Mrs. John Daab of this city is president of the district and she is bending every effort so make this one of the best conventions in district Royal Neighbor history. The sessions, morning, afternoon and evening, will be held at the Turner Hall, which will be elaborately decorated for the occasion. Meals will be served at the Evangelical church basement by the Ladies’ Aid of the church. The Columbia lodge will do the initiatory work and will initiate a class of twenty-five candidates. Dr. Hada Carlson, Supreme Physician of the order, will be among the prominent physicians who will attend the convention. The Fidesta Bible class of the Evangelical Sunday school met in regular session at the church basement Tuesday evening. The hostesses were Mrs. Bert Barlow, Mrs. Lou Schneider and Mrs. Gus Goeckeier, Jr. They served a delightful luncheon session at prettily decorated tables in the dining rooms. At a Memory Test game, Mrs. K.T. Lark and Mrs. Ralph Allison won handsome prizes. The class is orchestrating novel stunt that being a need all over the country to stimulate good will. At the next meeting the names of each member of the class will be placed in separate sealed envelopes and each member of the class will draw a name. This will be a Sunshine Friend and for six months the Sunshine Friends will be honored with little attentions such as small gifts and little attentions. All gifts will must be signed “Your Sunshine Friend” and not until the end of the six months will the members know who their Sunshine Friend was. Just another way of not letting your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
