The Waterloo Times September 1915 Columbia Painters are at work on St. Paul’s Evangelical church this week touching up the woodwork and metal trimmings. Fred Meyer, sr., exhibited a bunch of ripe blackberries Monday. They were second crop berries and were of excellent flavor. Monday evening a car of coal was derailed on the Gundlach switch of the interurban and it took several hours to get it back on the track. John L. Schmidt has secured the contract to build a new residence for Mrs. Loehr. Work on same was begun Monday and will be pushed right through. Several owners of Ford cars here have received their $50 rebate check and are correspondingly happy as a result. Who said a Ford wouldn’t give service? The Mississippi is reported on another flood stage and is over 22 feet at present. This is the umpteenth time for this year. The river is crazy as a March hare. Between 35 and 40 members of St. Paul’s Evangelical Church from here attended the dedication of the new Immanuel’s Evangelical Church in East St. Louis last Sunday. The brick layers are about finished at the new residence of Washington Grob. It will be a modern building and will be ready for occupancy by the time cold weather sets in. Henry Beckmann and his force of carpenters commenced work on a new dwelling for Fred Gummersheimer last week. It is to be a six-room brick house, two stories high. Our carpenters are always busy. Quite a number of William Ritter’s friends rendered him a surprise party Monday evening in honor of his birthday. Dancing was the feature of the evening. A splendid supper was served and refreshments in plenty were passed around. All present wish him many happy returns of the day. The Commercial Club met in regular monthly session Monday evening. Three new members were admitted. Louis Tunze and C.W. Breidecker were appointed by President Weinel as a committee to secure funds for premiums for the Monroe County Farmers’ Institute to be held here. The list of donors was also ordered published. Two jubilee services will be held in St. Paul’s Evangelical Church next Sunday in honor of the 75th anniversary of the German Evangelical Synod of North America. The morning service will be in German and will begin at 10 a.m. The evening service will be in English and begins at 7:30 p.m. Everybody is cordially invited to attend both services. Peter Roider of this city and Miss Matilda Yaekel of near Red Bud were married Sunday in the Catholic parsonage here, Rev. Goosens officiating. A celebration took place at the home of the groom’s mother after the ceremony. The young couple went to house-keeping in this city. Their many friends here extend congratulations and best wishes. George Glaenzer’s team took fright Monday and ran away. Near the home of Charles Diehl, north of town Mr. Glaenzer was thrown out of the wagon and received several contusions on his head besides being otherwise badly bruised. He was brought to town to have his injuries treated and no serious results are looked for at this writing. Miss Katie Raithel, daughter of George Raithel, was married to Mr. Joseph Mosbacher Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Schlinkmann, officiating. The wedding took place at the home of the bride’s parents. They were attended by George Zahn and Miss Lulu Mosbacher. A wedding celebration took place after the ceremony at which a large number of guests were present. The young couple went to housekeeping on the George Reithel farm. Their many friends extend congratulations. NOTE: The couple were actually married on September 14, 1915. A new society was organized by the ladies of St. Paul’s Evangelical Church on Wednesday, September 8. The name of the new society gives the purpose, Wohlthaetigkeits Verein (benevolent society.) The following officers were elected: President, Mrs. C. Niemeier; vice president; Mrs. E.F. Schoening; treasurer; Mrs. H.N. Kunz; secretary, Mrs. William Schlinkmann. The first practical object of the society is to furnish a room at the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital at East St. Louis. Everybody who is willing to contribute at least 25 cents and upward annually will be welcomed as a member of the society. Madame’s H.N. Kunz, P.G. Rapp and A.E. Weinel were appointed as a committee to solicit members who will assist in the laudable work.
