Charles Tunze of St. Louis visited relatives and friends last Sunday. Jule Vanderenter of St. Louis spent Sunday with Hy. Reichenbach. Ernest A. Weinel the hustling machine agent has just a received a car load of Deering binders. George Vogt of Stookey Township St. Clair Co. spent Sunday here visiting his brother William Vogt. Wheat is reported as looking the best in several years. In some places in the bottom it is beginning to head out. Mrs. Annie Wagner assisted by her daughter gave a lawn party Sunday afternoon to a large number of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Chapin and Miss Jenny Burroughs of St. Louis were the guests of Dr. N.G. Nixon and family. Henry N. Kunz and Christ. Huth were out at Gilmore Lake Sunday and Christ succeeded in hooking a fine six pound bass. Mr. and Mrs. William Lemen and daughter Miss Hulda of Burksville were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Lemen last Sunday. Miss Tillie Giffhorn who spent the past year with her grandparents at Tremont is again at home with her father Charles Giffhorn. Mr. and Mrs. F. Meyer and Mrs. Hannah Kuehner were at St. Louis last Sunday the guests of their friend Mr. and Mrs. Trappe. Mr. and Mrs. Hy. Reichenbach jr., Mr. J.W. Beck and Mrs. Wm. Reichenbach attended the funeral of their uncle J. Cleer in St. Louis last Friday. Fred Wenkel came near being seriously hurt Sunday afternoon at the ball game. He walked too close to Ed. Rauch who was in the act of knocking a ball in the field, and was struck a hard lick on the head cutting the scalp. The willow bat was cracked by the blow. Strange to say Wenkel was not even stunned by the severe blow. Last Wednesday, April 25, Miss Annie Toenjes was joined in holy matrimony with Mr. Conrad Neurohr, Re. Claus of the Catholic church officiating. The Misses Mary Pfeffer and Annie Reis acted as brides maids and Messrs. John Eschmann and Wm. Toenjes were best men. The young couple will make their home in the town. We wish them happiness and prosperity through life. The Columbia baseball team played their first practice game of the season last Sunday afternoon. The boys showed up fairly well, being perhaps weakest in the pitching department. The boys out Sunday were G. Fiege, C. Schneider, John Beck, J. Weissenborn, J. Doerr, John Schmidt, F. Meyer jr., C. Roessler and Wm. Grob. They have organized with Chas. Schneider as Captain; John W. Beck manager; and F. Meyer treasurer. Miss Mary Urke and Mr. Gus. Juengling were married on Tuesday, May 1 at the Catholic church by Rev. B. Claus. Miss Urke is the estimable daughter of Mr. Ben Urke a well known farmer residing on the St. Louis road near the turn pike. Mr. Juengling is a son of our fellow townsman, Chas. Juengling, and is a young man who has inherited many of the sterling qualities of Juengling sr. The Misses Katie Juengling and Katie Loose of St. Louis acted as bridesmaids, and the groom was attended by his friends George Roessler and Joseph Urke. After the marriage ceremony the usual wedding festivities too place at the bride’s home. The young couple will make their home in the Fiege house on North Second St. Your correspondent wishes the happy twain a goodly share of life’s blessings.
