The Waterloo Times August 13, 1915 94 Snakes At One Killing And now we come forth to chronicle a snake story; not a fish story but a real snake story. While at work under the water works bridge at the Fountain Creek, Philip Burkhardt and Louis Sommer encountered a little band of warriors better known as water moccasins. Immediately war was declared and after the battle was over, there were four dead snakes with all their young ones. Two of them escaped, however, and beat a hasty retreat. As soon as the excitement subsided, the heroes and their witnesses set about to count the young snakes. The first snake had 28; young ones; the second, 24; the third, 20, and the fourth, 18. Thus, the total number of dead snakes was 94, and a good day’s work had been accomplished.
