John and Mary McCauly |
John McCauly was
born June 24, 1798 in county Galway, Ireland.
The names of his parents are not known.
While still living in Ireland he married Mary Cummings. Mary Cummings
was born in Ireland On August 15, 1805.
Her parents were Michael Cummings and Mary Kelly Cummings. John and Mary
McCauly had at least six children.
Their oldest daughter was Margaret McCauly Duffy.
It is thought that the McCauly family arrived in the United
States sometime in the mid 1830's, as a son who was 14 at the time of
the 1850 census is listed as having been born in Maryland.
Patrick McCauly, possibly John's brother, and his family lived
next to John and Mary in Illinois at the time of the 1850 census.
They also list children as having been born in Maryland as well
as a 15 year old boy who was born in New York.
So it is probable that the two McCauly families came to the
United States in the mid 1830's stopping first in New York and moving
south to Maryland. From
there they apparently headed west to Illinois.
On August 24, 1839, John McCauly purchased 320 acres of land from
the US government in Section 22, Township 3 South, Range 10 West in
Monroe County for $1.25 /acre. It appears that
a number of Irish families who were probably related settled in Illinois
in Monroe County in the late 1830's and early 1840's.
In addition to the McCauly's, the 1850 census of Monroe County
lists several families from Ireland whose surnames were Cummings and
Kelly. Click the below links to view more data about this family. John McCauly Tombstone Mary McCauly Tombstone Submitted by Gene Block: Note Anyone related to these families is welcome to contact me at gsblock@linkline.com |
