Menke, Herman P.
Herman P. Menke, 97, of Columbia, died Dec. 7, 2006, in Columbia. He was born 
Jan. 9, 1909, in Prairie du Rocher, the son of the late Henry and Alice Menke nee 
Sawyer. He was married to Catherine Menke nee Schmidt. Mr. Menke is survived 
by his wife; sons Ervin (Donna) Menke of Columbia, Shirley Williams of Waterloo, 
Orville (Beverly) Menke of Columbia, Robert (Mildred) Menke of Waterloo, and 
Larry (Reba) Menke of Waterloo; daughter-in-law Shirley Menke of Waterloo; 
grandchildren Teresa Rusteberg, Pat Killingsworth, Michelle Gummersheimer, Dawn 
Menke, Mike Williams, Tim Williams, Kathy Ervin, Shryl Hamilton, Wayne Menke, 
Renee Hoggard, Shelly Menke, Nicole Menke, Susan Stratman, April Menke, Danny 
Menke, Millie Menke, Steve Menke and Heather Menke; 30 great-grandchildren; 
six great-great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy Mineman of Prairie du Rocher; sister-in-law 
Jean Menke of Red Bud; brothers-in-law William (Lorena) Schmidt of Columbia and 
Elmer (Maxine) Schmidt of Columbia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded 
in death by his parents; son Vernon Menke; brothers William Menke and Henry “Hank” 
Menke; son-in-law Elmer Williams; sister Mary Mineman; father-in-law and mother-in-law 
William and Augusta Schmidt; grandchildren Diane Menke, Donna Menke, Brian Menke 
and Bradley Menke; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Menke was a member of Immanuel 
Lutheran Church of Waterloo and Monroe County Farm Bureau. Visitation was at 
Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service was at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pastor 
Tony Troup officiating. He is buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo.
