The Waterloo Times Feb 5, 1913 SCHMITT George Schmitt, one of our oldest residents, died suddenly at the home place on South Main Street Monday morning, aged 84 years and 11 months. For many years the deceased was one of our best known shoemakers. At one time he had a shop in the Braun Building, but moved to his present quarters, believing at that time that the future Waterloo would be southerly. Like many of our pioneers, Mr. Schmitt was born in Germany, first seeing the light at Bechtheim March 23, 1828. At the age of 20 he determined to try his future in America, and started for New York. Two years were spent at various places, among them being Chicago and St. Louis, and in 1850 he came to Waterloo, where he has since resided. He has followed his vocation for the past sixty-three years, scarcely missing 1 day from his shop. Even as late as Friday he was on the bench. On Feb. 29, 1850, the deceased was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Schweick who still survives, comparatively hale and hearty. To this union were born Philip, George W., of the Columbia Star, Frank, Mrs. Henry Mosbacher, Mrs. Fred Bircher, William and Christine. There are also eighteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. About a year ago this couple had a family gathering, after a wedded life of sixty-seven years, which was celebrated at Bachlers Hall, hundreds of friends and acquaintances calling to pay their respects at that time. The funeral took place this afternoon in the Waterloo cemetery, being largely attended by sympathizing friends.
