The Waterloo Republican May 31, 1900 Sauerhage Another of Waterloo’s old citizens has joined the great majority. Frederick Sauerhage after suffering for a long time gave up the struggle for life and passed to the great beyond Monday morning, aged 59 years. Mr. Sauerhage was born in Westphalen, Prussia. Came to America when quite young and located in Waterloo. Jan. 12, 1869 he married Miss Theresia Frisch. Twelve children were the results of this union, nine of whom, with their mother survive him. They are George, Henry, John, Jacob, Theresia, Herman, Mary, Lena and Lizzie. For years Mr. Sauerhage was engaged in tailoring. Later on he went into partnership with Henry Jung sr. and engaged in merchandising. After some years he purchased the place now occupied by the Times office, and after rebuilding same opened a large general store therein which he conducted up to about twelve years ago when he sold out and retired. He served as deputy assessor under Ph. Arras and was working in the same capacity under H. Niebruegge when he took sick and had to hand in his resignation. Mr. Sauerhage was a man of quite disposition and excellent habits. He lived for his family, and his home was his chief delight. He was a member of the Harugari and Evangelical Unterstutzungsverein. The interment will take place in Waterloo cemetery this afternoon at 2 o’clock.
