Waterloo Advocate, April 12, 1877 DIED In Waterloo on the 5th inst., Charles HENCKLER, age 54 years, 3 months. Charles Henckler was born December 23, 1822, at the little watering place in Germany known as Wiesbaden. He emigrated to this country in 1835, and for a quarter century has been identified with the interests of Monroe county. He served through the Mexican War, was elected Sheriff of the county in 1850 and in 1853 entered on the practice of the law, in which he continued to the time of his death. His character is integrity and the faithful discharge of his duty was as widely known as his name. He ranked high among his colleagues and in the estimation of the public. He was no orator, but was eminent as a land and probate attorney, which his long residence and intimate knowledge of the laws and people of the county rendered him well fitted for. His loss is universally felt, socially and professionally, and a whole community extend to the grief stricken family their heartfelt sympathy. Transcriber note: I wonder why the obit doesn't mention his Civil War service? He is on the IL C.War site as having served.
