Obituary - Waterloo newspaper: CALLED HOME BY THE ANGEL OF DEATH CLARK Died in St. Louis, MO on May 5th, 1923, Mrs. Eliza Hilton Clark, aged 79 years and 4 days. Deceased was born at New Design May 1st, 1844, and was the daughter of Jos. Hilton and a grand daughter of Rev. Daniel Hilton, one of the founders of the New Design Baptist Church, and who laid out the cemetery connected with the same. Deceased was a member of one of our old pioneer families, and a sister of Sidney B. Hilton of this county and Ves. Hilton of Chester, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mattie Hilton Rinaldo, of Livermore, California. She was married to Silas Clark, now deceased, Nov. 16, 1865, and resided in this county all her life until the past three or four years. Three daughters, Mrs. Effie Fults, Mrs. Stella Cleer, of St. Louis, and Mrs. Ella Bertram, of St. Joe, in this county, and one son, Arthur Clark, of Collinsville, survive her, together with thirteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Her remains were laid to rest in the New Design cemetery Monday morning, and were followed to their last resting place by a large number of relatives and friends. Rev. Laurie J.Sharp of St. Louis preached the funeral sermon and conducted the last sad obsequies. Her funeral in this well known burying ground of pioneer days, recalls the fact that this is one of the oldest and most important cemeteries in this part of the state, and it is reported that a move is now in progress to restore it to its former beauty and attractiveness, in honor of the many prominent people whose remains repose in its hallowed territory, and also that a monument marking the spot on which the old church stood will also be erected. When the hard road is completed, and these changes have been wrought, it will be an object of much interest to all our people, and especially the members of the Baptist faith throughout all Southern Illinois. Submitted by Janet Flynn Gr-gr-granddaughter.
