The Waterloo Republican, Thursday Dec 15, 1892 Durfee The month of November and the early part of December have been especially fatal to our older people. There cannot be any immediate cause assigned to the unusual mortality in our midst, as we have no diseases of an epidemic form. When, however, a person has passed the four score mark in life's journey we may at any time expect a summons from an all wise Providence to the bourne from which no traveler returns. Mrs. Durfee, whose maiden name was Carlisle, a distant relative of the Carlisles of Kentucky, was born near Marietta, Ohio, on the 7th day of August, 1810. She received for those early days a liberal education and while teaching school she was married to Alexander H. Durfee, with whom about 1886 she removed from Ohio to Monroe County, Illinois, where he had selected a home. The village of Burksville Station is located on the Alexander Durfee farm. Mrs. Durfee left her surviving the following ! children, viz: Joanna, wife of Harrison G. Owen, Sophia A., wife of Paul C. Brey, Rhoda, wife of J.W. Drury, Caroline, wife of William T. Demint, Frank Durfee; all residing in Monroe county; and George Durfee, residing in St. Louis, Mo. and 26 grandchildren, and 5 great grand children. She died on the 27th day of November, 1892, without a struggle, quietly and peacefully as she had lived, sincerely beloved by all her children and highly respected by all who enjoyed her acquaintance for so many years.
