SCHMITT Mrs. Annie Schmitt, widow of the late Ambrose Schmitt, Sr., died at her home here last Friday, Sept. 30, 1938, aged 70 years, 5 months and 26 days, following an illness which overtook her last July. She was born in Waterloo on April 4, 1868, a daughter of Ferdinand Cawi and Frances Merkel, her parents, both of whom were born in Germany. She was united in marriage to Ambrose Schmitt, in St. Louis, who preceded his wife in death on the same date, exactly five years ago. Mrs. Schmitt’s funeral was held here Tuesday morning, the cortege leaving the Quernheim Funeral Home for Requiem Mass in SS Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, with interment in the Catholic cemetery. The deceased is survived by three sons, Ambrose C. and Peter W. of Waterloo and Julian A. Schmitt of Glendale, California and two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Fritz of San Francisco and Mrs. Elizabeth Wienhoff of this city. Two brothers, Ferdinand Cawi and Joseph Cawi and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Schlemmer and Mrs. Frances Janson, all of Waterloo, as well as a number of grandchildren, also survive. Mrs. Schmitt was a devout member of SS Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church and took an active part for many years in church activities and leaves many friends here who extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. Mrs. Beatrice Fritz, a daughter and a son, both of California, came home for the funeral. (5 October 1938 Waterloo Republican, Waterloo, Illinois)
