Waterloo Republican July 13, 1915 Frank Fogelpohl was found in a dying condition Monday morning on his premises near Kidd on the Baee farm. Help was summoned, but he was beyond resuscitation. The deceased was well known to our older citizens, having long been a tenant on the Grosse farm at Island Pond, and later on the Moeller farm near this city. After vacating the Moeller place he removed to one of Mr. Grosse’s farms in the Bottom, which he cultivated for some time. He was the hardest worker in the county, and it is claimed that he easily did the work of three men, apparently knowing no fatigue. It was not unusual for him to remain up all night and shuck corn, or to do other needful work, when everyone else was sleeping. His wife, nee Hoelscher, died some time since. Two sons John and Joe survive, and one daughter. The deceased farmed on an extensive scale and estimated his crop this season at 3,000 bushels. The recent hail storm, however swept thru his section and left not a bushel. It is supposed that he brooded over his losses, and that this led to the rash act. Appearances indicated that he had tied a rope to a tree and to his neck, then jumped over the fence. The rope was too long however, and allowed him to touch the ground, strangulation following. Coroner Wilhelm held an inquest over the remains. He was related to the Bird, Vogel and other Fogelpohl families, all having the same parent stock.
